Sharda Heritage Trust is a New Zealand based charity dedicated to preserving, promoting, and celebrating the rich cultural, linguistic, historical, and intellectual heritage of Kashmir, with a particular focus on the ancient Śāradā tradition and the enduring contributions of Kashmiri civilisation to the world.
Founded by members of the Kashmiri community in Aotearoa New Zealand, the Trust serves as a bridge between generations, cultures, and communities. We believe that heritage is not merely a record of the past - it is a living legacy that shapes identity, strengthens communities, and enriches the multicultural fabric of society.
Through education, cultural engagement, research, and community initiatives, we work to ensure that the traditions, values, language, and knowledge systems of Kashmir continue to thrive and remain accessible to future generations.
To create a vibrant and inclusive future where the cultural, linguistic, and intellectual heritage of Kashmir is preserved, understood, and celebrated by generations to come.
The mission of Sharda Heritage Trust is to:
Preserve and promote Kashmiri heritage, traditions, customs, and cultural practices.
Support the revival, teaching, and awareness of the ancient Śāradā script and related knowledge traditions.
Foster understanding and appreciation of Kashmiri history, literature, philosophy, arts, and spirituality.
Build connections between generations within the Kashmiri diaspora and wider communities.
Promote diversity, intercultural dialogue, and social cohesion within New Zealand's multicultural society.
Encourage research, education, and documentation of Kashmiri heritage.
Create opportunities for community participation, learning, and cultural exchange.
The name Sharada (Śāradā) is deeply rooted in Kashmir's history and identity.
For centuries, the Śāradā script was the principal script of Kashmir and one of the most important writing systems of northern India. It was used by scholars, philosophers, poets, and spiritual leaders to record literature, religious texts, historical accounts, and scientific knowledge.
The script derives its name from Goddess Śāradā, the embodiment of wisdom, learning, and knowledge. The renowned Śāradā Peeth, once one of the most respected centres of learning in the Indian subcontinent, stood as a beacon of scholarship and intellectual achievement.
By adopting the name Sharda Heritage Trust, we honour this legacy of knowledge and reaffirm our commitment to preserving and sharing the cultural treasures of Kashmir.
We organise cultural programmes, exhibitions, performances, and community gatherings that celebrate Kashmiri traditions, festivals, music, dance, cuisine, and arts.
We support initiatives that promote awareness and learning of the Śāradā script and encourage the preservation of Kashmiri language and literature.
We facilitate seminars, lectures, workshops, publications, and educational resources that deepen understanding of Kashmiri history, culture, and intellectual traditions.
We bring together individuals, families, community organisations, educational institutions, and cultural groups to strengthen connections and foster a sense of belonging.
We encourage the recording and preservation of oral histories, family stories, cultural practices, historical records, and community experiences for future generations.
We honour and preserve the cultural inheritance passed down through generations.
We believe education and learning are essential to preserving and sharing our heritage.
We welcome people of all backgrounds who share an interest in understanding and celebrating Kashmir's rich cultural traditions.
We foster connections that strengthen families, communities, and cultural identity.
We promote mutual understanding, cultural appreciation, and constructive dialogue.
We are committed to serving the community through volunteerism, collaboration, and meaningful engagement.
New Zealand's multicultural society provides a unique opportunity to share and celebrate diverse cultural traditions. As proud citizens of this vibrant nation, we are committed to contributing positively to New Zealand's cultural landscape while preserving the distinct heritage of Kashmir.
We believe that cultural preservation and cultural sharing go hand in hand. By celebrating our heritage, we contribute to a richer, more inclusive society where diversity is valued and understood.
The preservation of heritage is a collective responsibility.
Whether you are a member of the Kashmiri community, a researcher, educator, student, cultural enthusiast, or simply someone interested in learning more about Kashmir's remarkable history and traditions, we invite you to become part of our journey.
Together, we can preserve the wisdom of the past, celebrate the richness of the present, and inspire future generations.
